A wintry Saturday in March saw
the parish of St. Therese's Church in Nicholville, New
York return to its north country
roots with a lumberjack work day attended by about 45
men and boys.
An entire Saturday was given to felling carefully selected and
marked trees on the property owned by the church, while
tractors of all sizes dragged or carried the logs out of the
woods. Younger boys joyfully followed the good example of the
fathers and older brothers by helping to drag brush and split,
and stack wood.
A satisfying breakfast and hearty dinner were provided by the
women of the parish, with hot chocolate and hot coffee being
available all day. A total of 60 face chord was harvested and
subsequently distributed to parishioners. Another lumberjack
work day is anticipated, with the added project of marking
maple trees to be used in a potential parish sugaring
operation.
