Bishop Richard
Williamson has appointed a new lawyer, Mr. Norbert Wingerter, to
defend his appeal in the Regensburg high court.
This news
follows two press releases from the SSPX’s General House in
Menzingen, Switzerland, concerning Bishop Williamson’s upcoming
trial, originally scheduled for November 29, 2010.

On November 20,
DICI announced Bishop Williamson had dismissed his original
attorney, Mr. Matthias Lossmann, and hired a new one, Mr. Wolfram
Nahrath. Because of Mr. Nahrath’s political affiliations, this
choice of legal representation was unacceptable to the SSPX’s
Superior General, Bishop Bernard Fellay, who requested Bishop
Williamson to find a different lawyer.
On November 26,
the SSPX’s German District reported that in compliance with Bishop
Fellay’s request, Bishop Williamson had dismissed Mr. Nahrath,
and would seek another defense attorney.
Mr. Wingerter
is 72 years old and specializes in criminal law. He agreed to
defend Bishop Williamson’s sensitive case because “every
accused party has the right to a lawyer whom he trusts” [from
Die Stimme]. A new trial date has not been set, but
Wingerter believes that it will be held in March 2011.
